Doubling up major pieces on d-file

en.lichess.org/iCrm82sH/black#50

I decided to attempt an attack on the d-file by placing a rook there (25. ...Rad8 with an idea of 26. ...Nxe2 or something). Why was this a blunder and what should I have played instead? And before this move, is there better strategy I could have played?
It missed the tactical shot, Bxg4, removing the knight defending the e5 pawn, which then fell with check.
Tactics always spoils the best strategy. It's no good to ask for strategical advise when conrete actions are needed.

After taking on g4 the pawn e5 is hanging and the position is immediately lost. You don't have to think about a grand plan before this issue is resolved. Protect e5 for example by exchanging on e2 this stabilizes the Ng4.

Btw. have you thought what white had in mind when he played Be2? Did you notice his very obvious idea or did you only care for your strategy? Parrying threats is paramount in chess!

Generally you have to be careful not to overstretch the position. You can only win as much space as you can control with your (few) pieces otherwise a "space advantage" is a liability. But I believe this is a bit hard to digest for the unexperienced players...
